Madie's Reaction P.5 Ch.2

In this chapter there are a few interesting things that occur. First, Katerina Ivanova ends up spending most of the money that Raskolnikov gave them on Marmeladov's memorial. This seems slightly counterintuitive because the primary breadwinner for the family (Marmeladov) is gone, therefore they should probably be trying to conserve this money. However, it is soon clear why the does this, because of her pride. Throughout the party she claims herself to be a noble family, which is not true at all. Her stepdaughter is a prostitute, and her husband was a drunk. I think that she is trying to hide the fact that her family was broken by acting like she is wealthy and noble. Further, to make sure that everyone there knows her "noble" status, she insults the lower class guests who attend. Sadly for her, all of those who attend are lower class residents. I guess she feels that if she throws insults at them that it makes her higher than them. Additionally, it is clear that her health is worsening, she coughs up blood during the party. This I think is a sign that she will soon pass, leaving Sonya to take care of the family. During this dinner as well, Katerina gets into a fight with the landlady! And what's worse is that even in her ill state, the guests egg her on to fight! I am intrigued to see where she goes from here.
