Gabe's reaction Part 5 Ch 1

The opening chapter of Part 5 shifts the focus of the story more toward Luzhin. It starts off with Luzhin demonstrating materialistic and shallow nature. He truly believes that money is the reason why Dunya ended the relationship with him due to her inheritance. This shows Luzhin's cluelessness as he was clearly not a gentleman and did not treat Dunya right, but does not realize it. He devises a plan to frame Sonya, which made me look at him even more as a villainous character in the story. His actions and behavior make it clear that his relationship with Dunya truly is over. I feel as if Dunya may begin to focus her attention more on Raskolnikov now, who has shown clear intentions of wanting the best for Dunya. A new character appeared in this chapter: Luzhin's roommate, Lebezyatnikov. I did not really see too much of a purpose for introducing him at this point in the novel, but I am sure that his presence will be justified at some point in the story. He is somewhat of a funny character, as he is obsessed with intellectual fads and demonstrates this obsession at random and inappropriate times, such as when rushing to Sunya's defense. I did not find this chapter to be entertaining. It seemed to be more of a filler chapter than anything else, and I hope that the story proceeds to refocus its attention back on Raskolnikov and his dilemma.
