Madie's Response to Gabe P.5 Ch.2

Gabe and I agree on most parts in this chapter. We shared the idea that Katerina probably should not be spending all this money on the memorial, first because Marmelodov is gone, and second because her own health is declining. I liked how Gabe described her pride as being even destructive, and possibly hurting her family in the future. Her pride will lose all the money, and if she dies her family will not be able to take care of themselves. We both agree that she tries to use the dinner to prove her nobility, which she does not have at all. Her family is one of the lower class families, and therefore only the lowest class comes to the dinner. She reacts to this by insulting them all night as if trying to prove that she is better. Here I agree with Gabe that her behaviour is disgusting and arrogant. However, like Gabe said, I did feel some sympathy for her. She is trying to put on a facade to convince herself that she is in a better situation than what she truly is in. Further Gabe mentions that her declining health is a sign of her possible death in the future, which I agree with. Coughing up blood is pretty serious, and most likely will result in death. Like Gabe, I am enjoying the chapters that center around Raskolnikov, especially since the new twist of Nikolai's confession. I can't wait to see where the book goes now with so many plot twists and so close to the end.
