Gabe's response to Madie's P5 Ch2

I completely agree with Madie that Katerina Ivanova's decision to spend a large portion of the money that Raskolnikov kindly gave to her family on Marmeladov's memorial was not very smart of her considering the fact that Marmeladov is dead. Although Marmeladov drank most of his money away, he was still the source of income for the family. Now that they do not have Marmeladov to take care of them, this would definitely be the wrong time to spend money carelessly. I agree with Madie that she is doing this in order to satisfy her pride. At first I respected the fact that she is spending so much money on her husband's memorial and I thought it was a noble act of her. However, it soon became clear that this was not her soul intention. She simply wanted to make herself look like she is of a higher class and can afford to spend all this money. By boasting about her family coming from nobility, she is clearly sending out the opposite message. Madie brings up the fact that Marmeladov was indeed a drunk, while Sonya was a prostitute. These are clearly not aristocratic acts, which also supports the fact that Katerina is self conscious and also materialistic. She constantly yells at the guests and insults them, clearly attempting to boost her self esteem, but in reality she is making a fool out of herself and her family. I agree that Katerina should not be getting into a fight with her landlady, especially in her current ill health.
